Journey  8X10 oil and cold wax on wood panel  $75

This is the beginning of my journey into the cold wax medium.  Loving my book by Serena Barton, "Painting with Cold Wax."  The experimenting and painting is going on full force.  Lots of removing and trying again.  There is a lot of learning happening.

I am liking this one and hope you do too.

Coastline

This image appears much darker than it really is. There is a lot of warm rich color and texture in the bottom portion.

I am playing with combining alkyd medium and cold wax to my paintings which gives a richness to it.  The sample board you see below is me experimenting with some of the colors I like with some different tools for removing the paint.  Then when it is dry I am going to add a thin layer of cold wax medium over it and remove some so that I can see directly what the affect would be like.  That's about as analytical as I get.  After that its INTUITION.

Stuck

Acrylic on Gessoed Paper

Yes, I feel stuck.  I have no idea why.  I live surrounded by inspiration and have the space to work yet there I am stuck.  What to do?  I finally decided I would get out what acrylic paint I have left and start throwing some paint around to see what would happen. I mean literally throw the paint. No plan, no color combination, lots of water and have at it.  I started with smaller paper and then went on to half sheets.  The paper is gessoed so that it stays wet a little longer and the paint doesn't get absorbed into the paper meaning I can actually rub the paint off, if I choose.

The top painting is declared finished.  The bottom two are at the first stage. The underpainting.  If you turn your head to the left you could see potential floral paintings in a vase.  If you leave them they way they are they could both be developed into water scenes.

I rather like this bottom one for a potential beach scene with the shells, sea weed and other mysterious elements that float into the beach.

The beauty of it is that I am still stuck with my large oil paintings but I can keep going with these to see what develops.

I think I have 4 paintings going at once at the moment and when there is a lot of paint with no where to go I grab a panel and try different things.  A lot of them go in the garbage.  I call them learning exercises.  I rather liked this one.

Beach Walk

This painting was an experiment in patience and many many layers of transparent paint.

I wanted to see what happens when you use a printers roller to spread paint on the surface.  I had scooped some thick paint on and some thinned paint on.  Then I started to roll the paint together.  The texture was interesting but didn't quite do it.  From then on I put layer after layer of transparent paint on and the texture remained.  For the longest time I kept looking at it knowing it wasn't quite there yet and then when finishing another painting that had a lot of deep orangey red in it I knew just a touch of that color in the foreground  would do it.

Persistence.

Flirtation

Flirtation 30X15 Oil on Canvas  $295


Why flirtation?  Some don't come easy.  I think they will because I can feel the brush strokes in my body before I start and then I look and it just isn't there.  Then I put it away to dry and come back at it and so it goes.  Back and forth.  Is it heading for the garbage or will I give it another whirl.

Then it becomes a matter of "it doesn't matter so just go with it."  It flirts with danger (the garbage can) and color (my love).  Thick juicy paint.  Back and forth.  Many, many layers of color and they show through when up close.

Then all of a sudden I get this intuitive message to stop.
